Earth Day 2021: Celestica's Commitment to a Better Future

The Earth Day 2021 theme, Restore Our Earth™, is a call for a massive collaborative effort on the part of governments, businesses, educational institutions, NGOs and communities worldwide to combat climate change. Working with our customers, suppliers and employees, Celestica’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives aim to reduce the environmental impact of its global operations and accelerate the development of innovative smart energy and industrial products to make the world greener and healthier.

“The world is at a crucial stage when it comes to combating climate change,” says Rob Ellis, Celestica’s Chief Legal Officer and Senior Vice President of Sustainability. “We’re taking action within our company and in cooperation with our business partners to mitigate environmental impacts and contribute to a better future.”

Goals Met, Goals Set

Celestica has made remarkable progress in reducing its total GHG emissions over the last several years, including a 57.4% decrease in Scope 1 & 2 GHG - in alignment with the Paris Agreement.

Moving away from non-renewable energy and water sources has been a primary driver of Celestica’s ability to avert more than 6,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions and achieve a waste diversion rate of 92.7%. These projects include the use of on-site solar energy generation, procurement of renewable energy from utilities, purchase of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), and implementation of energy efficiency projects.

Celestica has received the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) approval for the goals it set in 2020 - validation that they align with the Paris Agreement’s science-based metrics: 

• Reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to 30% of 2018 levels by 2025
• Reduce absolute Scope 3 emissions from fuel and energy-related activities, purchased goods and services, and upstream and downstream transportation and distribution to 10% of 2018 levels by 2025

Celestica works with our customers on vehicle solutions and EV charging solutions that are ushering in a new age of mobility. The company enables high-efficiency solutions that generate, convert, control and monitor energy for homes and businesses worldwide. For example, Celestica enabled more than 6,000 MW of solar energy with one customer in 2020.

A Collective Effort

Celestica will continue to answer the call from Earth Day organizers and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for companies to create partnerships throughout their global supply chains and help one another achieve their ESG goals. 

Celestica closely tracks and discloses its carbon footprint resulting from manufacturing products on behalf of all of our customers to inform their ESG measurement and reporting.
