Medical device design transforms innovative concepts and theories into life-changing medical solutions. Ensuring the products meet the needs of the end-user, whether that’s a surgeon in an operating room or a patient in their home, is critical to realizing the customer’s vision and making it a viable product.

User Focused Design Solutions

Customer collaboration is one of the most important parts of the design process. At Celestica, we work as consultative solution providers, partnering with our customers to understand their product roadmaps and market demands to ensure we're on the right path from the very start. We work closely together to ensure we fully understand what the customer is trying to achieve, who the product will serve, and how it will be used.

That’s why our design process emphasizes frequent user feedback through multiple iterations and direct engagement. We test a variety of scenarios and use cases. We also observe surgeons actually using the devices as frequently as we can. Their feedback provides valuable insights which we use to improve the design. This helps us uncover hidden needs and refine designs, to develop solutions that truly meet the needs of the user.

Surgical Tool Development: A Case Study

Celestica was approached by our customer, a global medical device company, to industrialize a concept for an automated medical device used in surgery. The team was tasked with redesigning the customer’s prototype with ergonomics in mind to ensure it fit comfortably into a surgeon’s hands. Once the prototype was designed, the team observed surgeons performing surgery on cadaveric specimens using the device. This experience gave the team valuable insights into the design, its accuracy, ease-of-use, and physical effects on the surgeon, which was used to improve the design.

The product then went through rigorous reliability testing, resulting in the completion of over 350 surgeries without a failure. Since its FDA registration in early 2024, the surgical tool has been used in more than 10,000 surgeries across North America. This example demonstrates Celestica’s ability to execute full design projects that include manufacturing finished medical products from concept to use in medical environments.

A Consultative Engineering Approach

At Celestica, we believe that great products are born from a partnership, not just a plan. Our consultative engineering model goes beyond a traditional build-to-spec approach, immersing our team in your vision from the very beginning. We see ourselves as an extension of your team, a solution provider dedicated to understanding your product's purpose, its intended users, and its market. This collaborative journey is how we transform initial ideas and concepts into a physical product that is aligned with the needs of its end-users.
